About ICMNS
The International Conference on Mathematical Neuroscience (ICMNS) is an interdisciplinary conference series that brings together mathematicians, theoretical and computational neuroscientists, and experimentalists interested in using mathematical concepts and methods to understand the brain.
Many open questions about how brains function, and dysfunction, across spatial and temporal scales call for a wide range of mathematical tools: dynamical systems and bifurcation theory, probability and stochastic processes, statistics, partial differential equations, geometry and topology, information theory, and numerical analysis. ICMNS is a forum for this work, and also for the new mathematics that neuroscience keeps generating.
History
ICMNS was launched in 2015 at Juan-les-Pins on the French Riviera, organised by Olivier Faugeras, Stephen Coombes, and Paul Bressloff. After a second edition in Juan-les-Pins in 2016, the conference crossed the Atlantic to Boulder, Colorado, in 2017, returned to Juan-les-Pins in 2018 and moved to Copenhagen in 2019.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, ICMNS went online. Three free digital editions (2020–2022) streamed talks on the ICMNS YouTube channel (where recordings were uploaded after each conference) and experimented with new formats such as micro-talks and virtual poster sessions, reaching a broad international audience.
The conference returned in person in Dublin in 2024, celebrated its tenth edition in Barcelona in 2025 with more than 150 participants from over 25 countries, and was held in Montréal in 2026. See all past editions.
Format
Each edition typically features keynote lectures, invited talks, contributed talks and minisymposia, and poster sessions, with an emphasis on discussion across disciplines. Research presented at ICMNS has appeared in special issues of the Journal of Mathematical Neuroscience.
Steering committee
The members of the steering committee, by region and country, are found in the map of the ICMNS network.
